Herbals and Supplements

Over the past two decades, there has been an explosion in the interest of herbals and other natural supplements.  There are many products out there that can be helpful in the prevention or treatment of many disease states, such as heart disease, arthritis, depression, and enlargement of the prostate.

However, there is a common misconception that since these drugs are natural, they are completely safe.  A number of of these herbs can interact with the prescription medications you are taking.  For example, St. John's Wort, commonly used to treat depression and anxiety, has many interactions, decreasing the efficacy of many drugs, including birth control.  Also, in people diagnosed with severe depression, St. John's Wort can worsen the depression.  Several (Feverfew, Garlic, Gingko, Ginseng, etc.) can interfere with the action of prescription blood-thinners, increasing your risk of bleeding.

Please give us a call at Hook's Apothecary or stop by if you are thinking about taking a herbal supplement.  We would be more than happy to assist you in any way we can.
